A guest class for a capoeira after-party
Capoeira Evolução, South Austin
With Charles Ogar, Alina
A one-time, absolute-beginner kizomba class, taught as part of Capoeira Evolução's annual event after-party at their South Austin studio. It was the first time the group had put a dance class on their after-party program.
They asked for kizomba rather than Urban Kiz on purpose. Kizomba comes out of semba, from Angola. Samba, which sits at the heart of capoeira culture, carries those same Angolan and Bantu roots across the Atlantic. So the class was a way to put that shared lineage on a dance floor full of people trying kizomba for the first time.
An hour of basics and connection, and then the party.
